Empowering Ourselves… Is It Needed?
I strongly believe in a simple fact- “Technique and ability alone do not get you to the top; it is the willpower that is most important”.
Many people, often go about emphasizing the fact of women empowerment. How important it is for women to be empowered! My simple thought in this world is “There is no limit to what we want, and we can accomplish the same”. All we need is the right thought and attitude to achieve what we want in life.
It can range from being a home-maker to be a successful entrepreneur or maybe excelling in the field of her career choice. The proverb of “Where there is a will there is way”. Comes to me, making me think why can’t we all be able to achieve and be successful.
I recently went out with my sons to a shopping mall and I saw a woman driving an auto. I was thoroughly impressed and said “wow look at that”. My sons looked at me wondering what am I implying. I pointed and said this empowering to see woman sitting on the driver seat of an auto.
We are in a phase of life where there is chaos and confusion and we hear many women screaming out for empowerment and to be treated rightfully and equally. Here before I dive in any deeper, I would like to point facts of an era where women were competent and excelling in the fields of administration, and war.
In ancient Indian culture, women were treated as equal to men, and there was no discrimination on the bases of gender, instead of that women were honored by society, and society at the time considered women as Janani which means mother, even in Hindu scripts women are considered as Devi. They used to enjoy their full basic rights where they were free to receive education, at that time the wives of the rishis would willing to take part in spiritual activities with their husbands, they were also known as the Ardhangini (better half) too. During that period, women got to live equal life just like men used to live. Women in Indian history have gone through two things in their life one is subjection and deliverance. With the passage of time, their positions might have changed but in the Vedic era, they were a complete symbol of protector and caretaker of mortality and ideals.
These women were competitive with men in many fields and also received and enjoyed their rights and equality, there were no restrictions on them, and they possessed great wealth and property. Along with that they even had a very strong say when it came to guiding their offspring.
In the ancient text of the Vedas, the concept of humans is a bedrock for society, in taittiriya Samhita women and men were considered as the two-wheel of a cart. These lessons given by the Vedas to society were good examples of equality between men and women.
What is women’s empowerment? Ill-treatment for women has been a ritual for men, in some cultures and few decades back. In this unjustified treatment, women were not allowed to have property, they had no share in their own parents’ properties, and they never enjoyed their rights to vote and there was absolutely no freedom to chose their own way of lifestyle or job and so on.
That’s how the women’s empowerment came about, trying to bring equality to women. Helping women stand equal and fair with all rights. Women empowerment means exercising their power and their own will for their actions. Which means having control over your own material assets, intellectual resources, and your own ideologies.
Today we sit at a space, where even the law and justice has favored women for equal rights. There was a phase where women were subjected to being treated in certain ways. As I type this, I sit with my heart swelling with pride. I am happy to be a woman, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother and a mother in law. The roles are plenty, and being a women we have the ability to multitask and be able to get alot of things done at the same time.
Yes, I am sure many may want to debate in certain points of view that’s put by me, saying no, there are segments or pockets wherein even till date women have to make a noise or actually take a stand on their point. I do agree on this point, I also have seen and heard of such incidents and situations. When we see life as a constant flow of a cycle what goes around, will come around. We did have an age where women were treated equal and now we are coming to space and phase, that shows women are excelling in all fields of life. Ofcourse! You might have few pockets and areas where women are made to feel unwelcome. But that’s something that can be overcome with time, and determination.
Be it in politics, corporate world, science, technology, professional fields such as lawyers, scientists, doctors, engineers, architects, artists and so on. We have many strong, independent and highly respected as well confident women striving and achieving equality and moving with zest and zeal. There is no looking back. This is empowering as well as inspiring.
For me empowerment is, being able to do what I want and how I want with my own free will, without having anyone trying to stop me. Sitting in a chauffeur driven car, and being taken around for me is being empowered. It might look more like being spoilt or pampered. But I bet to differ, as having someone to drive, is not like I don’t know to drive. I drive when I have to, but I make the most of being taken care of, as for me that’s equally empowering. I have the freedom to dress, with what I feel is right, living my life on my own terms and conditions is empowering.
Now, though I spoke about my thoughts on empowerment, I know many women are yet scared to raise their voice or even try to speak for themselves. They rely on someone else, at times as I am writing this I am sure somewhere a woman is fighting for her right or respect. I again repeat myself, you have the choice as well as the free will. Only you can stand for your rights as well as your identity and no one else.
So for each one being empowered can be different. See what’s your meaning of being empowered? Each one’s perspective thoughts are different and opinions differ. As our upbringing and conditioning that’s been put out is different. The choice lies within us.
As we celebrate being a woman, let’s all stand together holding space for those women who need help to become resilient, so that we all stand together empowered and confident to take on the world with dignity, confidence and self-respect as our foremost tools.
Are you empowered?
Do you choose to be empowered?
Is what you need to ask yourself.
Let’s stand together cheering our fellow sisters and acknowledging them for who they are.
Each woman should take responsibility of owning up to her rights and self-respect.
Every successful woman’s story should be an inspiration of another woman to get on her feet.
I am a woman, I get to define my roles and responsibilities and no one else can.
