GODDESS TARA / MOTHER KWAN YIN
I was asked to write about the Goddess and as it came as a request from one of a dear friend who loves to read my blogs and also at times saves them to read at her leisure I couldn’t refuse writing about our beloved mother.
Before I talk about the goddess I would like to say how to she came into my life and the transformation she has bought into my life and home. I was oblivious to the fact there was a goddess with this name or that eventually, I would be praying to her daily. I was introduced to the goddess about 6 years back by my beloved godmother( teacher) who helped me out of my depression and put me on the path of spirituality.
When I was initiated and felt the presence of the goddess in my heart the tears of gratitude were overflowing just experiencing the presence of the divine love. Since then I have given the same experiences to my students who have come to learn and experience the energies.
My experience was like I have never lost my mother, every-time I would be upset or cry I would call out to my beloved mother Kwan yin and she has been there in my energy field holding me consoling me. Bringing her to my home too was a wonderful experience and I had her seated beautifully in my center.
She has not only wiped my tears and helped me out of my issues, all those who have come to my center and visited her have been blessed by her. A divine, calm, peaceful, and serene feeling settles in when we experience the Goddess of compassion. At times my students have got a strong fragrance of lavender smell during my workshops and I have often told them with a loving smile that mother is here with us.
The stories of her are not just with me, many who have a strong belief about her have experienced her presence one way or the other. It’s magical and unbelievable as to who she comes to hearing our cries for help and guidance.
The goddess of compassion, mercy, and forgiveness who is revered with many names and fondly prayed to across the globe. She is also known as the head of karmic council and a bodhisattva too. There are many stories and takes about the origin of this gentle lady master Kwan Yin/ Goddess Tara.
Let us first understand the concept of Bodhisattva. In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is any person who is on the path towards Buddhahood.
In Hindu mythology, it is stated that the Goddess Tara originated or emerged during the Dasa Maha Vidya or Great Wisdom Goddesses teaching. This is a form of shakti the tantric manifestation of the goddess. The word Tara is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘tr’, meaning to cross. In other Indian languages, the word Tara also means Star.
Goddess Tara is a meditation deity worshipped by practitioners of the Tibetan branch of Vajranaya Buddhism to develop certain inner qualities and to understand outer, inner, and secret teachings such as karuṇā (compassion), mettā (loving-kindness), and shunyata (emptiness). Tārā may more properly be understood as different aspects of the same quality, as bodhisattvas are often considered personifications of Buddhist
The main Tārā mantra is the same for Buddhists and Hindus alike: oṃ tāre tuttāre ture svāhā. It is pronounced by Tibetans and Buddhists who follow the Tibetan traditions as oṃ tāre tu tāre Ture Soha. The literal translation would be “Oṃ O Tārā, I pray O Tārā, O Swift One, So Be It!”
The other story goes about Avlokiteshvara
arrived at the place where he decided to seat himself for meditation. Gazing out, he perceived that the suffering on Earth resembled the Hell of Ceaseless Torment. Myriad beings were undergoing the agonies of boiling, burning, hunger, thirst, yet they never perished, sending forth hideous cries of anguish all the while. When Avalokiteshvara saw this, tears sprang to his eyes. A teardrop from his right eye fell to the plain and became the reverend Green Tārā and the teardrop the other eye became the reverend White Tārā.
Tārā manifests in many different forms. In Tibet, these forms included Green Tārā’s manifestation as the Nepalese Princess (Bhrikuti), and White Tārā’s manifestation as the Chinese princess Kongjo (Princess Wencheng).
Goddess Tārā is also known as a saviouress, as a heavenly deity who hears the cries of beings experiencing misery in saṃsāra.
Whether the Tārā figure originated as a Buddhist or Hindu goddess is unclear and remains a source of inquiry among scholars. Today, she is worshiped both in Buddhism and in Hinduism as one of the ten Mahavidyas. It may be true that goddesses entered Buddhism from Shaktism (i.e. the worship of local or folk goddesses prior to the more institutionalized Hinduism which had developed by the early medieval period.
Today, Green Tara and White Tara are probably the most popular representations of Tara. Green Tara (Khadiravani) is usually associated with protection from fear and the following eight obscurations: lions (pride), wild elephants (delusion/ignorance), fires (hatred and anger), snakes (jealousy), bandits and thieves (wrong views, including fanatical views), bondage (avarice and miserliness), floods (desire and attachment), and evil spirits and demons (deluded doubts). As one of the three deities of long life, White Tara is associated with longevity. White Tara counteracts illness and thereby helps to bring about a long life. She embodies the motivation that is compassion and is said to be as white and radiant as the moon.
Thus is the journey of our beloved Mother Kwan Yin/ Goddess Tara. The journey for me as when I came across her in my space. There are many tales about my experience and I shall write it in my next blog, for those who would love to read it.
I thank beloved mother for giving me an opportunity to write about her and share it as a blessing from her and I am honored and humbled about the same.
