How come you are always smiling?
A question often asked to me, and my answer is always a smile. When this question is often given to me or asked, I am taken back as I have no answer to give.
As I sat to write my daily blogs, this question came up and I was nudged to write about it and I just kept the tittle idle for some time as I was clueless what could I write about and needed some time to chew over the entire statement.
Smile is my biggest accessory and also my mask at times. As the years have passed, I have been told by many people that I have a beautiful smile. My Lifeskills coach when I was giving my presentation would smile as I spoke, he gave me an important feedback which really helped me. He said I have a beautiful and warm smile and that helps hide my nervousness and fear. So he was like when you are giving any presentation use your smile well it will be your biggest shield.
That helped me get more confidence in using my smile, and would use it as and when I need it. The next was as a counsellor I would go to certain government schools in my area to counsel students. Twice a week, I would be there by 9.00 am to 12.30 or so. The students over a period of time have often said we wait for you Mam, and I would ask why? The simple answer was there is so much warmth and positivity in your smile you make us feel so happy and blessed with the way you listen and smile at us when you close down the session.
Nevertheless, I was taken aback by the young kids coming up with such strong opinions about my smile and I started to get very conscious about it and at times nervous too. But in reality in my circle I have never been complimented on my smile. This would keep me wondering and trying to balance my thoughts with the kind of feedback I was getting.
I asked myself an important question what keeps me smiling always?
The answer is simple I always look for something that makes me happy and I allow that happiness to bring a smile unto my face. The happiness that I look for is usually inside me.
How did I learn to accept this in my life?
The journey has not been simple or easy and I was also oblivious to the point of knowing the importance of being happy and using my smile as a beautiful shield and accessory. Over the years life being an excellent teacher and has taught me in ways that with a smile no matter how tough the patch gets it’s easy to cross or pass through it.
Today the smile I carry has more confidence and ease. It is my beautiful and most precious asset and I choose to use it liberally. At times my smile makes people uncomfortable and at times it makes people comfortable. I have had my clients walk in and say your smile is assuring and comforting. Makes us see life in a much simpler manner. I have also had messages where people have told me with your smile you make even the most difficult task look simple.
Well, it was not easy to inculcate this smile to carry and help many people who walk through my door for guidance or help. There are many contagious things in the world and smile is also one of them. Why not smile and bring a smile onto everyone’s face. Makes our world a better space to live in.
Some simple steps to help build a positive and confident smile.
- You need to work on loving yourself for who you are and allowing the true personality to build and have a strong foundation. The self-love work helps one reach a level of self-acceptance.
- Trust is the next point when you are unable to trust your acts or thoughts that would become difficult to work on any issues and also leads to questions of self-worth and being over critical. Look at working on trust issues and building on them.
- There are no ifs and buts on anything, so instead of relying on ifs and buts for all situations look at being more assertive and open to the outcome of whatever choices you have taken.
- The blame game is not going to sit well here so don’t go down that track. These blame games will only be bringing bitterness and a lot of unhappiness into one’s life. Look at ways to own up to whatever the situation it is. Remember it takes two to tango.
- Comparison or trying to imitate someone is only going to tire you on the path. Each one of us has our very own individuality so look at polishing and working on that instead of trying to copy someone else.
- Perceptions of two individuals are different so don’t try to sell your perception of what you see or buy the perception of the other person. Your thoughts should be only shared when needed.
- Happiness always lies within you so do things that lie within you and not for the sake of pleasing the world or trying to impress others. This kind of acts would lead you nowhere but give a lot of dejection and pain.
- Carry and practice gratitude for all the things that you have in life which is important. The more gratitude you have the more happiness comes your way as you know how much you have and come to a point of accepting that.
These are simple steps that you can try to use which I have used and has helped me build a confident smile. Today with year’s of working on my self has made me treasure my smile and I use it without hesitation and liberally as and when needed.
Carry your smile as a precious jewel and flaunt it with confidence and ease.
Allow your smile to be positive and comfortable so that others would love to copy your smile.
