Significance of Vijayadashami
Om Dum Durgayei Namaha🙏
The tenth day of Navratri is celebrated with much joy and happiness as it’s believed that it is the day where Goddess Durga had victory over the demon Mahishasura. This marks the triumph over evil. This is celebrated all across the country with a lot of enthusiasm.
As the name suggests, it is victory over evil, the demon had a buffalo body and human face with horns on his head. He had a boon wherein he would only die when a woman kills him. Knowing this he ruled all the three worlds and everyone was petrified of him including the devas.
Eventually, the devas could take it no more and they approached the holy trinity for help, all the devas were asked to gather and through each one’s strength, beautiful divine goddess energy was created with the required weapons. She rode a lion and moved ahead to slay the demon.
The goddess challenged the demon, Mahahisaura smirked thinking what can a woman do to him. Thus began the war between the two, it is believed that the battle lasted for nine days and on the tenth day the goddess slayed him.
This is a story we have heard while growing up and also have told our children, it’s written in length in our ancient scriptures, and all we worship the goddess with pure love, devotion and pray for her protection on us.
Let us all during this auspicious day sit with our own thoughts and emotions and see what are the things that we don’t need to carry with us.
the feelings which need to be released
the hidden demons that need to be addressed with us
the imbalance of energies within us
emotions that is weighing us down
This can only happen when we have an elementary balance and keep our three Gunas
in control and balance out all our needs and emotions. This can be beautifully depicted with the trident ( Trishul ) carried by the goddess.
Sattva- positivity, purity, pleasure, divine
Rajas – selfishness, desires, controlling
Tamas- pain, demonic thoughts, negative
We can easily attain self-realization by easily allowing ourselves to move towards the spiritual path releasing and making ourselves the light of all the heavy baggage that keeps away from our true essence. When we understand that a soul can never be harmed or broken or burnt. ( which is so beautifully depicted in the Gita) No matter what, a soul can not be tainted black. It will be easy to let go of all the earthly emotions and move towards unconditional love. The lotus in the goddess’s hands depicts this saying that a lotus blossoms beautifully in muddy waters. So we should not let certain things stop the evolving of our soul.
The chakra in her hand beautifully can be signified as the path of righteousness and dharma. One needs to know his/ her dharma and not shy away from it. When we understand the importance of our dharma ( duty) we can start moving towards it. Yes, we have a duty to our family and to cater to their needs and necessities. We also have a duty to our soul and to the divine and one needs to know that and work towards fulfilling that as it’s equally important.
When we start looking at each of the weapons the goddess carries and sees the significance and apply the same to our life. It becomes easy for us to bring light onto our path as we journey on. Praying to the divine energies helps us stay grounded and focused. Praying with fear gets you nothing but when we pray with a pure heart, and unconditional love we get the grace of the divine on us. This is much needed for us to move on in life.
We pray to the goddess not only for balance within ourselves but also have balance in the universe. Praying to her and seeking her protection is much needed by one and all. Especially now during these unprecedented times. As she is the creator of the universe and our supreme mother.
On this beautiful and auspicious day of Vijayadashami let us pray to the goddess and also seek her guidance for awakening her energies within as we walk the path of self-realization. Let us address the demons suppressed within us and release all that serves us no good.
