THE LIFE CHANGING JOURNEY OF BECOMING A HERMIT.
In the ancient times there lived a king, who was a true warrior and always on the path of conquering and expanding his kingdom. Nothing could stop him, as he had his mission and visions that kept him going.
His mission was only about having power, name and fame. He was not looking at the welfare of his people or taking care of the administration.
Many kingdoms he conquered through unscrupulous ways. The point of being righteous was not in his thoughts. Leaving his queen back in his palace, every kingdom he conquered he married the princess of that place.
This was infuriating the queen, she was feeling insecure and unloved. She decided to teach her husband a lesson an important lesson in life. She set about along with some of her trusted aides to plot against the king. Though her intentions were pure her ways were not right.
Somehow the king got a whiff of something was being planned against him and he without a blink of an eye got his queen and her aides to be banished from the kingdom. Giving a warning if they ever try anything they all will be executed without giving any second thought.
The king continued his, journey of conquering, until eventually destiny moved his path towards a lone hermit, who had many lessons to be teaching the king. When the king reached the hermits place, he looked at this frail and old hermit and thought what harm can he cause, he can’t even move. He asked the hermit for water the hermit invited him saying please come in oh king, I shall be honored to offer food to you in my humble abode.
The king with his arrogance laughed in his mind wondering how the hermit would be able to feed his army. He decided to mock the hermit. The hermit, said please don’t worry behind my hut, there is small stream flowing please go freshen up and come I shall keep food and water ready. So the king went to the stream he and his army freshened up and came back.
True to the fact food was ready and potable water, the king was flabbergasted but hunger took over he just ate to his heart content and after he was done he tried to question the hermit. The hermit only smiled and said “ Athithi devo bhava” which means guests are like god.
So I have served you with love and respect. The king tried his best to break the hermit down.
The king spiraling with his ego, tried everything he knew, only to be hit by a strong wall of peace and love. Finally the king gave up, and fell at the hermits feet seeking forgiveness and asked what is it that one thing that kept the hermit strong.
The hermit smiled and said nothing I only kept blessing you know that you needed to nurse your ego which was not happening. I didn’t get affected by anything you said. While the hermit was relaxed the king was rattled to his bones with his own discomfort and irritation.
He asked the hermit to guide him in how to get to the state of being as peaceful and content as the hermit is, where nothing bothers him. The hermit smiled and said go into the stillness within you the answers lie within you. Saying which he walked back into his humble abode without a second look.
The king returned to his palace feeling unhappy, sad, frustrated as nothing had got him the happiness that he had seen on a hermits face. This was a huge nudge for him to think, and he decided to renounce everything and go into the forests to meditate and seek answers for himself.
When we bring this story into our life’s aren’t we all the king, going about recklessly doing things being callous and insensitive to many things around us, removing people who try to tell us we are wrong. Ignoring the hurt and pain we are causing on the path. Being unscrupulous with many thoughts and acts. The bad habits that we have and all the negative acts we have inculcated over the decades of journeying we are with these habits as if they are our companions for life. We can actually do without our actual spouses but it would be difficult to let go of the newly acquired habits.
Isn’t this sad, that we are willing to negotiate and let go of our true companionship while the ones we believe will be with us forever will eventually start leaving when there is no use for it in your life. Such is the irony life that we have everything messed up and our priorities all totally messed up. We just don’t know and never realize the faults we have done until it’s too late and sometimes we don’t know how to turn back.
Our life’s journey is pre destined true, but never do we think of reworking and changing certain things within us just to accommodate our loved ones and family. Reasons could be that we take them for granted, or we reach a point where we don’t care about what they think or feel anymore.
It’s not about actually becoming a hermit and renouncing our worldly pleasures. It’s about bringing in balance and having a quest to seek answers and knowing what’s wrong and right. Trying to find happiness and peace in our modern world’s concrete jungle.
It’s natural to get caught with the nitty-gritty of life and forget our true path. Slow down think and choose the rightful direction.
Life has its ways to make us slow down and gets a mirror for us to have a reality check.
