WHAT IS BOUNDARIES? DO I NEED THEM?
We all know the boundaries that is been put for our homes and workplace and these are ways to be part of defining space and making it clear that no one can enter without permission. Similarly, boundaries are a healthy way of making space for self so that others know what is their space of entry.
Boundaries are something I often talk about as it is important to set boundaries and also work on them regularly. As the space of boundaries keep on shifting and changing with
- Time
- Situation/ Circumstances
- Perceptions
- The moments of emotional state
- Past experiences
- Uncertainties
- Fear of Rejection
There are times when we are just unaware and look at just the world as it is and take things at face value being totally unaware of what to expect. Through this, at times we may be off guard and the chances of getting hurt or pained will be way higher than when your guard is on and you are aware of the boundaries that is placed around you.
Do we need boundaries?
Yes it is needed!
Through this we know and also can prioritize as to who we allow into our spaces and who we keep at a distance for our own peace of mind and comfort. While setting boundaries we also need to keep in mind that we cannot please the world. Every act of ours we must know there will be a difference of opinion and that is absolutely okay. As no two perceptions are the same.
What may be right for you, may not be okay for someone else and that is absolutely okay to accept? There is no need to justify or try to prove ourselves right for

How
We are trying to do something, as no one is interested. It is your life and your decisions are what is most important to you. Of course, if need be seek support or guidance especially when in a dilemma of what is right or wrong.
Through the process of setting boundaries, we can maintain healthy relationships and also keep them that way. There may be various instances certain statements may be stated or may hurt you. When boundaries are there and you retreat back into your space you will be surprised as these won’t affect you the same way.
The important point to keep in mind is we can’t change others or their thought process. But we have the ability to change ourselves and our thought process with understanding how to keep ourselves in our boundaries and not allow certain people in them. Especially those who are going to overstep boundaries, or try to prove you wrong.
The basic and natural instinct is to shrivel away and lick the wounds and curl to hide ourselves away without setting boundaries. This gives others a golden opportunity to step all over your space and create havoc which you may not really like.
One may ask,
Is it important to set boundaries with family too?
Yes, it is very much needed and it is important as here the space definition has to be put the rightful way or else there can be a lot of disharmony. The closer the relationship the stronger should the boundaries be.
Any relationship without boundaries can become toxic and unhealthy as I have stated. As we are opening ourselves to be
- Taken for granted
- Not acknowledged
- Respect for time or your work is lacking
- Your opinions are not taken into account
- Priorities of yours are right at the last.
I can state more but here the importance to understand why we need boundaries.
This would break us and also bring down our
- Self respect
- Confidence
- Self love
- Self esteem
Leading to a lot of issues with us with the way we think or how to do certain things. Through the process of working on self and understanding your strength and weakness, we can work on setting and defining boundaries.
